Repeatability in music videos

Chris Brown feat. Justin Bieber - Next 2 You

This music video is a narrative music video. It is about the world ending and because of this it has repeatability. There is a lot going on in the video. It's almost like a short film making audience want to watch it over and over again because of the action in it. Both artists in this video have massive fan bases which also gives the video repeatability.

This is how the music video begins. It starts off with the directors name Colin Tilley. Colin Tilley is well known for his adventrous movie-like music videos and his work is magnificent. For the audience to know that Colin Tilley directed this music video automatically gives it repeatability. The use of black background and white writing shows the juxtaposition of the two colours. Also the typography is centered in the middle emphasizing the importance of the director of the video.

This close up of a hand shows the hand on a window. The and is positioned in the rule of thirds framing showing the importance of Chris brown. The use of the low key lighting is causing the hand to appear shadowed. The editing technique special effects show a fire where the hand is. The use of explosion creates a sense of enigma for the audience. This lets the audience know that the world is ending and Chris Brown and Justin Bieber need to find the girls they love. This gives the video repeatability as the audience want to know whether they rescue and find the girls they love or not.

This is a high angle of Chris Brown. The use of the high angle allows Chris Brown to look extremely vulnerable as he is lost searching for the girl of his dreams. The setting shows an urban messy gritty environment which connotes the world is ending. The shot has a slight blue tint over it which connotes the emotion in which Chris Brown is feeling. Chris Brown is right in the center of the shot representing his importance as he is a globally known music star.

This is a low angle, extreme long shot of Justin Bieber. The use of the extreme long shot makes him appear small and vulnerable however the low angle makes him appear as superior as he seems to be on top of the world. Below him the world is ending and being destroyed whilst he is safe high up on the building, showing his superiority. There is space between Justin and the clouds, the use of the framing allows Justin to appear more dominant as there is nothing behind him.

This is a mid shot of the two artist trying to save the girls they love. The lighting is low key and the only source of light is the fire on the car in the background. The fire is in the rule of thirds and the two artist are in the center making them superior. The lighting is so low key that they are both appearing as silhouettes. This looks like it has a sepia tint over it. The use of the sepia tint neutralizes the shot making the setting appear more natural and calm, subverting what is actually going on as the world is ending. At this point in the narrative the audience want to know whether they find the girls they love or not.

This is a close up of the girl that Chris Brown loves. The use of the close up reveals her emotions showing that she is unhappy and looks hurt reinforcing that she wants Chris to save her. This is a eye line match. She is in the rule of thirds connoting that she is important to Chris Brown. Her make up shows her as beaten down and in pain making her vulnerable. She is looking at Chris Brown to which another eye line match is shown. This causes tension and suspense for the audience making them want to watch the music video.

This is a high angle of Chris Brown who is about to attempt to jump a large long jump in which he cant do. The high angle foreshadows the events of his death as the high angle connotes inferiority. Right now Chris Brown is being represent as inferior which is subverting the usual stereotypes of music artist as they are usually portrayed as superior. The use of mise en scene is unrealistic and the crack on the floor is in the center of the shot connoting the importance of the narrative being about the world ending.

JESSIE J - PRICE TAG

Jessie J has a very specific star persona. Her hair always in the same black cut bob with a fringe. She is also known to be fun, girly and energetic which she displays in her music videos. She has a lip fasination in which she displays in her music videos too.

Price Tag begins with a long shot of a teddy bear. A teddy bear is a childish prop to have and Jessie J is known to be childish and immature which is a part of her star persona. The teddy bear is in the center making its purpose important. The background is a girly baby pink and white faded into it making it childish and like a little girls bed room. This represents Jessie J's childish girly star persona.

This is Jessie J leaning on the teddy bear which connotes her childish star persona. She is wearing a dusky pink dress which conforms to her girly persona. She has heels on too which is a girls item emphasisng her girly star persona. Even though this is a long shot the audience know that this is Jessie J in the shot because of her hair being a visual motif.

A close up is used to reveal Jessie J emotion as she is throwing a tantrum. A purple tint is on the shot connoting her girly side suggesting that she is wealthy as purple has connotations of wealth and power. Her performance makes her seem like she is throwing a tantrum like a little child would do which is her subverting her age. However the performance of the tantrum goes with her childish star persona. The close up allows the audience to identify her hair style which she is well known for and it act as a visual motif.

This is a high angle extreme long shot of Jessie J. The pink background is in this again. This is a visual motif in the music video which represents her girly star persona. She is in the center underneath a tree. Her performance shows her as excited under the tree which is similar to how a little child would act.

This is stereotypically a little girls favourite toy during childhood. In this long shot, the audience see Jessie J posing as the toy which connotes her fun girly star persona. She is wearing a very girly dress which is white which connotes innocence and purity. Little children are innocent and pure and therefore this conforms to Jessie J's star persona.

This is a extreme long shot of Jessie J riding a little kids toy of a tricycle. The prop of the tricycle is a little boys toy. This goes with the baby blue background which is a little boys favourite colour stereotypically. The use of the tricycle connotes Jessie J's fun personality however it subverts to her girly personality.

This close up shows Jessie J's lips. In all of Jessie J's music videos she has extravagant lip make up. In this she has pink jewls on her lips making them eye catching and connoting her as having a girly star persona.

This extreme long shot shows Jessie J and a mini her. The audience know that it is a mini her because of the hair style. The straight black hair with a perfect front fringe is Jessie J's style. The are both composed in the center of the frame reinforcing their importance.

This extreme long shot shows Jessie J sitting on a chair which is too big for her. This is child like and connotes her star persona. Jessie J is composed in the center, regardless of the prop of the chair being bigger than her, her composition regards her as dominant.

Digipak Analysis

Drake - Take Care

Take care is the second studio recorded album from the Canadian artist Drake part of young money entertainment and cash money records, released on November 15th 2011, originally meant to be released on October 24th but was delayed due to sample clearances. However, November 6th, Drake dropped one of his album tracks on the flow radio station 93.5, crew love featuring the weekend. However shortly after, the whole album was leaked.

Moments after the new songs was leaked Drake tweeted ' i am not sure if the album leaked. But if it did thank god it doesn't happen a month early anymore'. Shortly after he tweeted ' listen, enjoy it buy it if you like it... and take care until next time.' not seeming to be too concerned about it, just wanting to ensure that his fans are happy with his second album.

The front of the digipak portrays the artist, Drakes second studio album was titles 'take care'.  This front cover portrays the conventional features of a rapper through the use of props and the mise en scene. The use of gold suggests wealth and status which coveys the view of sterotypical rapper who is showing their weath through various items such as a watch and a gold chain. Drake is sitting there staring at his watch perhaps connoting that he cant wait for his album to be released and him to make his fans happy. He also has a gold cup connoting his wealthly status. The use of the gold theme throughout the cover shows Drakes superioty as he is very wealthy. The camera shot of drake is a mid shot as we see the top half of his body. Drake isnt looking straight at the camera suggesting that he could be shy which can be portrayed with many of the songs on the album being about love. The album cover gives off the idea that he is kind of old school as he doesn't look very modern with the use of art work and candle. This subverts the typical stereotype of a rapper as they usually pose in front of urban areas, tall buildings and flashy cars, so the album cover shows Drake to be subverting the usual representation of a rapper. Even the album name on the cover continues with this theme with the font. The typography is typed with a laid back approach, looking mellow fitting in with the whole cover of the digipak as on a whole it looks extremely calm. However, one thing thing that is unconventional is that the album cover doesn't have the artist name on the cover reinforcing Drakes power to the music industry showing that people already know who he is so there is no need for him to put his name on the front cover of the digipak.

The back of the digipak cover follows with the theme of the front cover with the same colour tone of gold and same typography. The back cover also follows the front cover as the same simple theme has been implied.  The use of the simple theme connotes that Drake doesn't need to be over the top to create a huge fanbase. The institutional infomtion at the bottom shows who Drake is signed to which helps promote the CD as young money are a major label with a global audience appeal.

This is Drakes album poster which follows the same theme throughout the use of typography and the colour gold. Gold is Drakes visual motif, the colour gold connoting that he has worked his way to the top and is now wealthy and powerful.  Once again Drake isnt looking at the camera in the picture connoting that even though he is powerful, he also has a shy, emotional side which is portrayed through most of his songs on the album. He is again wearing black costume which connotes the simplicity of the album cover and poster. The prop of the gold rather than silver jewellery also follows the gold theme. These props also portray Drake as a conventional rap artist.

Genre analysis

HOW DO THE MICRO ELEMENTS REPRESENT THE GENRE SO IN OTHER WORDS HOW DO CINEMATOGRAPHY, EDITING, MES, SOUND  REPRESENT POP?

RIHANNA - RUDE BOY

Rihanna is a worldwide well known Pop music artist who has been very successful in the music industry. Her pop songs always manage to make it to number 1 in the charts. She is considered as 'sexy' and 'seductive' in which she portrays in her music videos. The video I will analyse is Rude Boy. This song is of the pop genre and the music video conforms to it.

The music video begins with a close up of Rihanna's heel. It is a restricted shot because the audience can only see the heel. As soon as the heel hits the floor the beat drops therefore it is synchronised with the sound. The costume of a heel is considered sexy and most female pop artist always wear them in their music videos. The heel is black which costume wise the colour is considered sexy. The use bright colours are conventions of a pop music video.

Rihanna is dressed in sexy and seductive clothing to appeal to a male audience. The use of a the mid shot reveals Rhianna's costume reinforcing the pop genre, which appeals to the male gaze. Black is a conventional colour in a pop video. The editing technique super imposed is used to emphasise Rihanna's importance. Again, the use of bright colours are conventional to a pop music video.

Rihanna is positioned in the rule of thirds framing which signifies her importance as it is also a close up. The use of the close up reveals Rihanna's image reinforcing that this is a pop music video as her costume denotes her wearing sun glasses and revealing clothes. Rhianna is wearing big chunky earings and a big colourful bracelt which allows audience to identify that Rihanna has a girly star persona.

This is a mid shot of Rihanna once again dressed in a seductive costume. Also she is biting her finger dong a sexy pose, and throughout the whole video is wearing revealing clothes to appeal to a male audience. Rihanna is wearing a glove and accessories to emphasise her sex appeal and to portray her femininity. The use of the bright colours also reinforce that this is a pop music video for filling the pop genre conventions.

This is a long shot of Rihanna posing with a lion. This could suggest that Rihanna is fierce, also there is a crown drawn on top of the lions head emphasising that Rihanna also has the has a lot of power in the music industry. This also connotes that Rihanna's star persona is a sexy empowered female artist. Rihanna is also dressed in a leopard print costume to look sexually provocative, appealing to more of a male audience.

This is a mid shot of Rihanna and her love interest in the rule of thirds framing. The use of the yellow tint on Rihanna and her partner connoting their happiness. The word 'boy' is framed on both people including Rihanna objectifies her. The Barbados flag is inside the text. Rihanna is from Barbados therefore this connotes her star persona.

Analysis of past students work

Linkin Park - Papercut

The Linkin Park video opens with an over the shoulder shot of a boy watching a fuzzy tv. This is sychronised with the music as the soundtrack is an up tempo fuzzy rock music. Throughout the whole video editing uses fast pace shots which is conventional to a rock music video to allow the audience to try and engage with the beat of the music and restricts the audience. The video is extremely dark and is shot in low key lighting which reflects on their star persona as punk and rock people dress in dark dull clothing.

A close up is used on the young male to show his emotions, however his hood is up covering his face which restricts the audience from seeing his full emotions, almost allowing it to be like a siluet of the rockstar. It is also lit with low key lighting which creates a sense of mystery.

A midshot of the male rockstar sitting in a bath tub with his close on is used to show he is in a dark place reflects with the dark lighting which is conventional to a rock genre music video.  Also the use of him sitting in a bath tub in the dark is quite depressing peharps suggesting he is going through a rough time.

Most of the camera movement is handheld which allows the audience to fully engage with the song and almost allow them to feel part of it. However the fuzzy tv in the fuzzy tv in the background could connote that he is confused and his mind is a blur, like the tv.
My opinion of this students past work is that it has been shot really well and the use of costume and lighting makes it seem like a realistic rock video but just doesnt appeal to me as i dont really like the rock genre of music.

Blame It On The Boogie

The blame it on the boogie video opens with a male listening to a Dizzie Racal song and then breaks into blame it on the boogie which juxtaposes the music video as they are two completely different song genres.

There is then a long shot of all four characters revealing there costume, there all wearing old style clothes trying to conform their costume to the video which connotes to the song because the song is old aswell. There are all similarly dressed which connotes that none of them are trying to break free from the star persona of the video.

Straight away you can tell this is a conceptual music video as it uses titles to allow the audience to know whos in the video. This is a convention of conceptual music videos. The font colour used is orange and yellow which are two bright colours connoting that they are happy to be starring in the

music video. The font used is easy to read and perhaps child like font which connotes youthfulness emphasising that they are youths that are in the music video.

The use of the split screen editing technique connotes that they all have an equal significant to the band showing that they are all important. This is a conceptual music video as the video has no relation to the words of the song and you can tell that the students thought hard about the concept.

Katy Perry - I Kissed A Girl

LOOOOOL THIS ONE IS SO GAY BUT YH. TALK ABOUT FEMINISM IN THIS CAH ITS PARODY THAT A BOY IS SINGING THE SONG CAH OF WAH ITS ABOUT. THE BOY SEEMS GAY SO SAY THAT, HES MORE FEMININE WHICH IS FUNNY. TALK ABOUT HIS HAIR, COSTUME, AND CAMERA MOVEMENTS. THERES NOT MUCH TO SAY ABOUT EDITING BUT JUST TRY SAY SUTTEN ANYWAY. BUT THEN BAAAM YOURE DONE. OH AND SAY WAH YOU THINK OF IT AND WHAT GRADE YOU WOULD GIVE IT AND WHY

I thought the remake of this video was funny as it is a guy miming the words is a parody of what the songs about.

A midshot is used on the gay to show half his costume and reveal the setting in the background. The guy seems to be very feminine which is funny as its a parody of the song as it is about kissing a girl. He is wearing on open shirt revealing his chest which is very camp. Also the front of his hair is dyed blonde which emphasises his femininity. Also the juxtaposition between the camp boy and the mise en scene of an urban setting suggest they are trying to question stereotypes.

A mid shot is used of the mimer to reveal his costume and emotion. Also it is shot in the rule of thirds framing emphasising his importance to the music video. He is once again dressed in a white shirt suggesting that he is innocent and pure. However he is wearing a black waist cote connoting that he can also be dark and evil. The use of dark eye make up emphasises his feminine side allowing the audience to find this video funny.

This is an extreme close up of the guys eye revealing his make up. The use of pink eye shadow could connote that he is happy. The heavy make up could be symbolism of hiding his true identity. However the extreme close up of an eye moving side to side was quite a surprise for the audience as it is a unexpected shot.
